Year 1 29.9.23

Date: 29th Sep 2023 @ 2:41pm

We really enjoyed getting the laptops out this week and getting to know all of its different components. We look forward to turning them on next week and learning to use the mouse and keyboard! In Geography, we looked at our school grounds on Google Earth. We 'emotion mapped' them by deciding how we felt at each point on our map. The children felt 'excited' near the climbing frame and 'nervous' in the KS2 corridor about getting older. I was super impressed by the children's map skills!

In maths, we have focused on using the words "more/ greater", "less / fewer" and "same" to compare numbers and groups of objects. We learnt the symbols > < = and remembered it by thinking that the greedy crocodile always like to eat the greatest number! One of the children came up with the idea of 'building a bridge' to remember = so the two equal numbers can 'be together'.

In writing, we wrote an animal inventory and wrote facts about penguins - see if your child can tell you any intresting facts at home!

In P.E, we enjoyed doing balances on points (elbows, kneews, hands, feet) and patches (back, tummy, bottom). The children came up with some amazing balances. A little plea - as we support the children to be independent when changing for P.E, it would be helpful if girls could wear socks rather than tights on Thursday's (unless they can do their own tights!). Long socks will be a stepping stone for children to learn to do their tights themselves. Please encourage your child to be independent when changing at home also!

Spellings: these are not phonetic and need to be learned through memory. Please practise multiple times a week.

Homework books are in your child's bag - capital letter practise. At the end of Autumn term, children are expected to be able to start sentences with capital letters. To do this, children need to know the sound to letter correspondences for capital letters. e.g. If they are starting their sentence with 'penguins', they need to know P corresponds to the sound p. This is an ongoing homework as well as writing first and second names.
