A warm welcome to Year 6

We hope that you have all had a lovely summer break and that you are all ready for an exciting Year 6- we are all very excited to welcome you back to school. Below you will find some information ready for the year including PE days, staffing and homework schedules. Towards the bottom of this page, you will see a files section where you will find our autumn newsletter and topic web. This document outlines more details about our curriculum this term and some important dates specific to Year 6. 

Staffing

We are extremely lucky to have an experienced team of adults working together in Year 6 this year. Miss Poland will be your child’s class teacher with her PPA (planning and assessment time) on a Monday afternoon. During this time, Mrs. Hayes will be teaching the class their French and music lessons. We are very lucky to have Mrs. Johnson and Miss Monaghan supporting the class during this term.

Things to bring

All day-to-day equipment will be provided by school such as pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers and sharpeners. However, during art activities, using our creative humanities books or publishing our amazing writing, your child may wish to use their own felt tips, colouring pencils or gel pens in their own pencil cases. They be instructed by the class teacher or support staff if they are allowed to collect them from their bags to use them on their work.

You will need to bring in a suitable water bottle each day which can be refilled at specific times during the day. Please remember to include a healthy snack to keep your child going in the morning – fruit or other healthy, nut-free options only please. Snack will be available each day for your child to order during the morning routine. 

PE

Our PE sessions will be on a Thursday and Friday. Your child will be required to have their PE kit in school throughout the week due to possible changes of our time table at short notice. We are asking you to send your child's PE kit to school in a named bag- these will be kept in the cloakroom and sent home every half term to be washed.

In the winter, we wear a navy-blue tracksuit. In summer, we wear navy shorts, a blue school t-shirt and trainers. Earrings and watches should be removed and long hair tied back for PE.

Reading

Reading for pleasure is still something we want to encourage for our older children. We do have a great selection in class and hope that your child will enjoy trying something new and varied for their personal reader. We also read our class novel every day as well as a great mix in our whole class reading sessions. Please continue to read with your child at home. It is a wonderful way for you to spend some quality time with them as well as improving their fluency and understanding of new words. They will come home with their 'Reading and Homework Diary' which will contain their homework, spelling patterns that we have being learning in school and important information for the following week. Please ensure that your child brings in their homework diaries into school every day.

Homework

Homework will vary between a reading/writing task or a maths task most weeks, with an occasional topic task set where appropriate. Homework will be set on Friday and expected to be returned by the following Friday. Due to the importance of Year 6, homework plays a vital part in ensuring your child revisits previously taught skills to keep these fresh in their heads or as additional learning away from the classroom. As a school, we understand the importance of extra-curricular activities outside of school and that sometimes it is hard to find time to complete homework at home. Therefore, we offer one lunchtime each week where the children can complete their homework in the classroom which can also be guided by the class teacher or support staff. This is NOT compulsory and is the child’s choice if they wish to attend. As a class, we will decide which day of the week this will be and update you when a choice has been made.
